Ben Aaron (husband of Ginger Zee) posted an adorable photo of sons Adrian and Miles together on the couch. Miles is seen wearing an Angel Dear product as a result of our Easter 2018 Bag.
The other day, I was watching Adrian play with a truck on the playground when an older kid came over and took it from him without any regard. Now, this of course wasn't the other kid's fault since he was 4 years old and didn't know any better but I saw in Adrian's face something that struck a huge emotional nerve in me. Adrian, like just about every other kid on the planet, will most likely be bullied at some point in his life. It's just the way it is and it broke my heart. Most of us were targets of a bully throughout our childhood. I mean, my parents named me BJ for goodness sake. Thanks for that by the way. But I thought to myself, how could this be possible? How can someone look at a sweet, sensitive soul like Adrian and fathom hurting him on purpose? And what bothered me most of all was that I wasn't going to be able to protect him from this. I can't form a protective parental shield around my boy. When it comes to the name calling or teasing at school it's open season for kids. If he's too tall, he would be teased, too short…teased. Then it dawned on me. What I can do, what we ALL can do as parents is teach our children the proper ways to handle this situation. Now, when I was younger I had conflicting perspectives from my folks, my dad told me to find the nearest garbage can and launch it at the bully, where as my mother had a more rational way of handling it. Success. The best revenge in any capacity is success. I always loved hearing about the nerdy kids in high school who go off to make a billion dollars, have a beautiful family and live brilliantly. They are in a way giving their bullies the ultimate non violent, non confrontational clap back. Of course, I'm not saying that Adrian has to make a ton of money in order to feel successful, rather achieve a life that he aspires to live. If I teach Adrian to respond with violence, he will spend the rest of his life responding with violence, especially in the world we live in now where trolls live in every corner of the internet. But If I supply him with the tools to focus on his own game, his own dreams and rise above whatever he faces, then he wins. Far more than any push or shove.
